The Ins and Outs of Argumentative Essays

I do not like people who argue. I specifically dislike people who regard arguments as a sport. These people enjoy argumentation so much that they are always looking for a chance to pounce on you.

However, that does not mean that I do not enjoy writing argumentative essays.

If the topic of an argumentative essay is to your liking, you will quite likely already know a lot about the topic being discussed. As a result, the least I would expect from you, as a teacher, is that you would explore both sides of the topic before taking a stand.

What this means is that if you were talking about the impact of technology on relationships, for instance, you would have to ensure that you look at the positive aspects of technology on relationships, as well has been negative impacts of such technology.

for or against the topic. If you have a fairly discussed both sides of the argument, and then take a stand, your stand will seem valid.

Sounds easy, right? But you will be surprised how few people are able to actually give a fair chance to the opposite side of the argument. By the opposite side I mean that side of the argument that they do not necessarily subscribe to. This is why an argumentative essay is a good filter for people who are strongly biased or are constantly looking out of colored glasses.
